SKAM REVIEW

SKAM

Skam is Norwegian webseries about the life of a group of student the nissen high school. Each season shows us the life of a different member of this group of Friends.

The first season introduces us to Eva, a sixteen years old girl who has just start upper secondary school where she doesn’t know anyone but his boyfriend, Jonas, and the best friend of him, Isak. During this season, we can see Eva facing love, friends, school and personal problems.

Unlike other webseries, Skam released Little clips during the week in real time, so if the main character is talking with his friend Monday at five in the afternoon the clip will be released Monday at five in the afternoon. Every Friday an episode with all the clips that had been released that week is broadcast on NRK. In addition, mobile messages and photos on Instagram are published to complement the plot.

These particularities allow the audience to feel more connected to the characters and it is, probably, what has become Skam in one of the most viewed series on Norway. But the popularity of Skam has been extended for all the world thanks to the third season that introduce topics as homosexuality and religion.

Despite being a Norwegian series, the language hasn’t been a problem for millions of teenagers. Nowadays is difficult to find a series focus only on teenagers and, although the lack of parents has been the main critic of Skam, in my opinion this just reflects the teenager reality.

To be able to reflect this reality in a fair way the screenwriter interview thousands of Norwegian teenagers from whom she creates the characters.

Even if when watching the series, you can have some difficulties understanding some things, like the Russ, due to the difference between our culture, language and tradition, you would realise that your life is that different.

One of the things I have love the most is that Skam doesn’t try to educate teenagers saying them how bad are alcohol, drugs and sex. Moreover, through the characters, the series transmits values against homophobia, islamophobia and sexism.

If you are looking for a new series I highly recommend you Skam, I can assure you that you’ll feel identified with the characters and you’ll not be able to stop watching it.
